When Students Are Struggling: Using Math Groups to Fill Gaps

There’s nothing like sitting across from a student who’s trying so hard to get it but just isn’t there yet. You can feel their frustration. And sadly, a lot of times, as you’re working with them you come to realize it’s because they are missing key skills from previous grade levels.

That’s why small group math time is so special. Working with your students in a small setting allows you to have time to spot, identify, and fill in those missing gaps!

But do you ever feel like the curriculum provided by your district isn’t up for the job? A lot of times, a ‘big box’ curriculum is designed to move at a fast pace and assumes your students are all on grade level! And let’s be real, it’s usually not engaging or kid-friendly.😬 So maybe you are now at a point where you find yourself searching for something more to bridge those gaps and make learning math enjoyable for even your struggling learners.

This is where having a solid set of materials can make all the difference. With resources that build on each other day by day, you start to see those small moments of progress that mean so much. In my math units, the daily objectives are intended to be achievable for that day. The units break down the skills into more bite-sized pieces that can really help your struggling learners grow.🌱

In every unit there are posters, hands-on templates and manipulatives, kid-friendly games, and vocabulary materials that help your learners make connections. Imagine seeing one of your struggling learners suddenly using math terms during small group time. They’ll say things like, “Oh, this is a fraction because it’s part of a whole,” or, “This has same-sized parts, so it’s partitioned equally.” They’ll be using language that shows they’re really starting to understand math.

If you’re looking for consistency in your math group time these units are just the key. You’ll love having unit overviews that help you pinpoint *exactly* where your students are dropping off and getting confused. It makes your review time so much more valuable because you’ll know *exactly* what to focus on. Oh, and did I mention that the units have built-in review time every 5 days?
