Small group instruction is magical.
You can help your students make huge gains and there are many other benefits to working with them in a small group setting.
Let’s talk about some of the reasons why you should be teaching in small groups.
1. No Hiding
Students who don’t typically participate in a whole group lesson aren’t able to hide.
This means you are able to work with them directly, while sitting in close proximity to them. This can really help some of your shy students because they are more comfortable in a small group setting. It also can help build relationships with your students!
The bonus? Your students will feel closer to you and they will learn to trust you to help them.
2. You Can Notice Different Things That Would Go Under the Radar in Whole Group
Since you are only working with six or less (hopefully) students at a time, you can notice things about them that may have gone unnoticed in whole group.
You may observe a repeated mistake a student makes or misconception a student has.
It’s easier to notice these things when you are working with less students at a time.
3. It’s Easier to Differentiate
You can actually individualize your instruction as you work with students. In a small setting, the real magic of learning can happen.
I love to use wipe off boards with my students as I teach my Guided Math lessons.
While you are working, you can lean over and explain something in a different way to a specific student. This can be hard (if not impossible) to accomplish in a whole group setting.
4. You Can Give Immediate Feedback
Feedback is so important so students know when they are on the right track and when they are making mistakes. The small group setting allows you to give your students instant feedback while they are working so closely to you.
