Classroom newsletters are a great tool for communication between school and home. It is so important to send home newsletters, whether you do a weekly newsletter or monthly newsletters.
I decided to make an editable classroom newsletter template that is based in PowerPoint. I made these customizable templates in PowerPoint because it is really easy to edit–all you have to do is insert a text box! What’s even better? It’s FREE!! 🙂

Here is a closer look at some of the months… You can use these monthly newsletter templates during the entire year! They’ll save you a lot of time and are a great way to send quick updates!
This newsletter template is the most popular free resource in my store. It has been downloaded by tens of thousands of educators!
Be sure to click the link at the end of this post to grab your copy! (Make sure you download it on a computer since it is a PowerPoint file! It won’t look right if you open it on your phone. You can also upload it to Google Slides once you’ve downloaded the PowerPoint.)
Why It’s Important to Send Home School Newsletters
School to parent communication is essential to having a good school year. If you teach prek – 6th grade, you want to be regularly communicating with families. There are many reasons to send home a newsletter, whether it be monthly, weekly, or at another interval.
Here are some reasons why you should send a newsletter:
- Keeps parents informed about what’s happening at school, such as important upcoming events, important dates, etc…
- Allows parents to know what their child is learning about. (Some children don’t share much about their day and parents aren’t sure what questions to ask.)
- Sharing important information empowers and helps parents feel connected to their child’s education
- Allows parents to know how they can help out! (Whether you need field trip chaperones, volunteers for field day, or even some supplies!)
- Provides communication as is an opportunity to remind parents of various ways they can contact you
- Sending home a printed hardy copy of the parent newsletter is an easy way to have parent communication with parents who may not check your class website or class dojo
- Strengthens the bond between home and school!
- Allows you to show your school administrator all the ways you are communicating with your students’ parents
What Should Be In a Monthly Classroom Newsletter?
What you include in your classroom newsletter is up to you! I have seen teachers use these editable newsletters in so many different ways.
Here are some ideas of what you can include in your monthly newsletter:
- Classroom news and updates
- What we’re learning about (just a simple peek into your lesson plans!)
- Special projects the class is working on
- Questions parents can ask their child about their learning
- Class birthdays
- Info and dates of important events, holidays, field trips, school closures, early release dates
- Spelling words or important vocabulary
- Shoutouts and celebrations
- Needed supplies
- Info about school clubs
- School news, policy changes or updates
- Classroom management policies or information
- Your contact information
- For older students, you can provide direct links for parents to use to extend learning at home!
What Program Should I Use to Create My Classroom Newsletter?
There are many options for teachers who want to make a classroom newsletter! I like to make everything in PowerPoint because it is so easy to edit, add text boxes, and resize things. It’s the perfect way to have the most control over the look of the newsletter. You can download my free editable monthly newsletter template and try it yourself!
Other options for free editable school newsletter templates are Canva templates and Microsoft Word. However, I find Word to be the least flexible in terms of design, so I don’t recommend using that.
