What do 2nd graders learn in math? Students grow with their ability to understand place value and addition and subtraction. They will begin to learn the foundation of multiplication and they’ll also learn fractions for the first time. In this blog post we’ll go over 2nd grade math topics from the 2nd grade math curriculum.

This 2nd Grade Math Curriculum includes twelve units covering all second grade math standards. The units included range from beginning the year with place value to ending the year with measuring and graphing. However, these units can be taught in any order because they are independent of each other. You’ll easily be able to match them up to your district pacing guide.
This 2nd grade math curriculum is perfect for teaching small-group math or even to use as a homeschool curriculum.
The topics of the units in 2nd Grade Math are:
- Place Value
- Even and Odd
- Mental Math (10s and 100s)
- Mental Math (Within 20)

Year at a Glance: 2nd Grade Math Pacing Guide

The above photo shows the year at a glance pacing guide that is included in the Guided Math bundle for 2nd grade. The units align to common core standards, which most states have adopted (or have adopted identical ones). If you teach in Texas, you can learn more about the TEKS correlation here.
The units can be taught in any order; the year at a glance just shows my suggested pacing. Want a copy? Sign up below:
Tips for Teaching 2nd Grade Math with this Curriculum:

The lesson plans include daily remediation and enrichment ideas. And, best of all…the lesson plans are fully editable in PowerPoint.

Using all of the 2nd Grade Math Curriculum Materials:
Vocabulary cards, definitions, and questions from the lessons are provided to display. You can put these in a pocket chart, or have them out on the table while you are teaching a lesson.

The units include plenty of opportunities to check students’ understanding. Daily practice pages are a great option for independent work while the problem of the day is perfect for a ticket-out-the-door problem.

Printables are intended to be used to support instruction and provide students with hands on tools, posters, templates, and more that can help them understand whatever topic you are covering. My favorite are the vocabulary trifolds that students can use to record definitions and examples of the math vocabulary terms.

If you’re always looking for fun games to practice the 2nd grade math skills, then you’re going to love the daily centers included in the units! These 2nd grade math games are the perfect way to practice the daily objective in the lesson plan!
